My choices would be Ottawa and Vancouver. Both had High hopes, They both blew it

I guess I will say the Toronto Maple Leafs. Even though it is pretty much expected now, they easily have the talent to make playoffs yet always collapse during the season. Another underachieving team this year was the Tampa Bay Lightning. They have all-star players in St. Louis, Lecavlier and Boyle but finished in the league basement. Although I did not think they would go far this year, I expected them to at least make playoffs or miss by a few points, not 23!

* A lot of people are bringing up Ottawa which is a valid point. The first 20-something games prooved that they had a steller team and could win the cup but they disappeared pretty quickily with the many problems aka Ray Emery (soon to be Ex-Senator)

Ottawa

Tampa Bay . . . No way they should have done what they did with the "Big Three" now the "big two", they did have boyle out who is a big catalyst, but he is offensive defenseman so they should not have given up so many goals. It'll be interesting to see how Smith who was incredible in Dallas responds as a #1 next year, excited to see it.

hello this is not a whos record or finishing position dropped. It's who underacheived.

Not Vancouver, their whole defense was on IR. Poor scoring, but they are a team that feeds off its defense frustrating the other team. Ohlund, Krajicek, Mitchell, Bieksa, out on a defense first team, get real, they did fine. Actually they started developing players. Look out if they pick up any FA scoring.

Not Buffalo. Get real they lost their Campbell, Briere, Drury, and Biron. Can't expect them to do what they did. They did better than I thought they would, so I dont think thats underacheive. Actually I think that they will in the long run benefit because it forced players like Vanek to really step up, now when they but some FA they will be better off.

Not Anaheim, they had a couple bad games at the start of their series and thats what got them, they were the better team overall in the last 4 games despite the record of 2-2. I think Perry healthy would have been the difference, losing a leading goalscorer is tough.

Having high hopes and not reaching them is NOT underachieving. Teams like Vancouver and Tampa Bay didn't get better in the off season - they got worse. Expectations were just out of wack.

OTTAWA did the least with the most. They pretty much returned the same team they had last year and added Stillman and Commodore. They started out hot and just disintigrated.

ANAHEIM would be a distant second. This is a team that's gone deep in back to back playoffs, and was the concensus favorite to repeat before the season started. However they lost a lot of key player games to injury, suspension, and semi-retirement. Getting beat by Dallas really isn't a shocker, as the Stars have always had Anaheim's number.

NEW YORK would be third. Yes, they've advanced in the playoffs but it took them almost three quarters of the season to gel. The additions of Drury and Gomez should have lifted this team to the #1 or #2 seed in the East.

Ottawa really underachieved. Cup contender to barely making the Playoffs and getting swept.

Vacnouver. Many people's pick to go past round 1 at the beginning of the season.

Buffalo. See Vancouver.

a team with high expectations that played up to those expecations?

obviously not the ottawa senators...

basically when they started loosing and i remember someone saying that this is going to go down in hockey and sports history, and it really is. if it doesn't i'll do a good job of reminding sens fans about this in the future.

go habs!!!

and also ducks hockey...man. nucks. someone should make a list. leafs won't make that list though, cause we sucked way before.

all these other good teams, jersey, sabers

"Ottawa is the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. All flash in the regular season and nothing in the playoffs."

yeah i know. i had this same thought before going to bed this morning...not like i wanted to link a team i like, suns, to a team i don't sens, but i was thinking about the whole flash and dash scenario. w/e. ottawa fans you guys have some loosing years ahead (hopefully). come join the leafs suck bandwagon.

I would say the Senators underachieved. They are basically the same team as last year, and the almost missed the playoffs, and they got swept 1st round.

I would also say the Ducks. Although they aren't really a regular season team, they are also defending champions. They should have stepped up to prove that it wasn't a fluke. To make matters worst, they got knocked out 1st round in playoffs as well.

I'd have to agree with most folks on here and say Ottowa... they were fierce earlier on and everyone expected they would carry that into the playoffs.... it was a huge surprise the way it turned out!

Ottawa has to be first and foremost...because after opening the season 15-2 they then went downhill at the end of the season. Getting swept by Pittsburgh didn't help thier cause anymore either.

Definitely Ottawa. They did sooooo well and then they just completely FLAKED!

Also, yet again, i was dissapointed in the Leafs. I hope to live to see them win the Stanley Cup....

Ottawa no doubt, though I do blame Emery a lot for their downfall. Too much of a distraction for the team, hope they cut him or trade his a$$.

I agree with AA.

I'll add Tampa Bay, only three years removed from a Title to not even coming close to the playoffs... Ouch
