Question:
Who, in your opinion is the worst value on your team? (comparing salary with production)?

Now, understand that some players bring more than just points to the team.... so the player you think your team has overpayed for or acquired in a trade thats not living up to his salary in some fashion or another.

BONUS... Which player that was signed this summer wont live up to his salary league wide? (whether it be from extension or a new signing)

The Islanders still owe "Cashin" Yashin around $14.4 million over the next five years and get ZERO production out of him. He never lived up to his contract in terms of production while he was there either. Guerin @ 4.5 million is a close sceond.

Bonus:

Huselius at @ 4.75 million with Columbus. Depends if he can revert back to form now that he's away from Keenan (again).

The Magic 8-Ball says whoever signs Sundin for 10 + million. It's not saying he can't play, but it is just ridiculous.

I agree with Vinny. No one on the Wings really jumps out at me as being overpaid for what they do. Sometimes I get annoyed with Mikael Samuelsson, but he only makes $1.2 million, which is fine for a guy who has averaged 40 points per year in the 3 years as a Wing.

I think Ryan Malone won't live up to his salary, but who knows, he will probably again be playing with really good centers. Ooh, I forgot about Jeff Finger.

As far as Hossa goes, the question was "who do you think will fail"..., not "who do you want to fail". IMO, if the Wings didn't sign him, they would have had $8 million in cap space. That would be a travesty for an organization that pretty much every player would want to play for. So who cares if he does get hurt, that was available money to throw at him. Also as far as Hossa goes, $7.45 million is not a lot for a guy that everyone wanted. He could have gotten more anywhere else, including Detroit if it weren't for the classy act by management for not wanting to pay him more than Nick Lidstrom.

Kyle McLaren. He's 2.5 million dollars worth of nothing. He was a healthy scratch for most of the season and playoffs. He always looked to lazy on the ice. He didn't move his feet well, he can't shoot, he causes bad penalties, and he has been lingering with injuries the past season. He has not lived up to his potential after signing the 2004 contract of 2.5 million a year. I honestly think a lot of ECHL defensemen could be better than him. McLaren could be the slowest Shark out there. And it seems on a 1 on 1 breakaway, the other player gets by him too easily because of his lack of speed. The best part about him is his checking. Though his checking recently has had a low quantity.

Marleau was not. He only got paid 4 million last year and I think he really lit-up in March. If he had a bad March, I guarantee you that he would have been traded before his no-trade clause went up on July 1st. After the 2008 trade deadline past he seemed to have an extra kick in his step and played great posting 18 points in his final 20 games.

Plus getting key goals in games 3,4 really impressed me. He scored 2 of the 3 goals in Games 3,4. But scoring 3 goals in 2 games in the playoffs as a team is terrible.

TDK- I can totally understand your Bonus. But I have to argue. Rob Blake, 5 million. It seems steep for a defensemen with only 30 points. What the Sharks have lacked in the playoffs is consistancy and leadership. They now have tremendous leaders with Thornton, Boyle, Lukowich, Blake, Roenick, Grier, Pavelski. But Blake has had playoff experience which the Sharks need, he has talent on the powerplay, he's a right handed defensemen that are hard to come by, but now they have 2, and obviously he is a great leader which I think that they could not win a cup without. And maybe he could've stopped that pass to Brenden Morrow in the 4th OT in the playoffs, but just maybe! As I have seen him in the past he is a definite playmaker. The Sharks have such great talent which I think all the new defensemen can make better by setting up new plays, carrying the puck down ice, not coughing it up to the opposing team, and actually getting the puck in the offensive zone while on the powerplay which I realized they struggled vs Dallas in the playoffs.

I do think Blake could be worth more like 3.5 million or 4 million. But I'm glad what Wilson did. Although I'm not happy about all those draft picks he's traded away (in past years) that will hurt the team's future along with trading Ty Wishart.

To sum up what I've said

-Marleau could be paid 1 million less but he's still great to have

-Kyle McLaren sucks and needs to be traded to fit Hedican, Clowe

-Rob Blake could be the last puzzle piece and I'm glad WIlson signed him

Oh wait, I forgot to do the bonus!

Bonus~ Wade Redden, 6-year $39 million contract. Thats pricey for a guy that has been struggling on the ice and having troubles off the ice.

If the bonus is for your own team then I'll say Blake, by only 1 - 1.5 million. Even though he doesn't score in the BIG points, he is great with leadership and everything elese I said up there^^!

Oilers: Roloson - 3 mil, Pisani - 2.5, Souray - 5.4

Bruins: Fernandez - 4.33 mil

Bonus: There's lots. Hainsey in Atlanta for 4.5, Redden in New York for 6.5 over 6 years, Avery in Dallas, and, of course, Jeff Finger.

Don't know how so many people can be down on the Hossa signing -- probably just envy I would guess. This guy has averaged over 30 goals a year since his first full season and actually back-checks too.

Eh, probably Darryl Sydor.

Sydor only makes less money than Gonchar, Whitney, and Orpik. Including those four, the Pens have 8 defensemen who all started at one point last season, and who all could probably make the starting roster this season. There's also Alex Goligoski who might be good enough to play for the big team this season, not the Baby Pens. So there are four, possibly five, players who make less money than Sydor that might fill his roster spot. If not at the beginning of the season, possibly during the playoffs. So the real question would be: is his veteran leadership worth that much?

ADD: And why would the Pens trade Sydor at the deadline or not resign him at the end of the season? 'Cause his value, for the money, isn't worth as much to the Pens as what they have for less money... besides his 2 Cup rings (veteran experience). Look how much he was scratched last season. Who's worth even $2.5million to sit on the bench?

ADD2: Nipsy, we're saying the SAME thing. I agree, it WOULD be a good idea for the Pens to trade Sydor at the deadline or to let him go at the end of the season. He's expendable, and what the Pens could get for him might help out more than he would considering they have EIGHT other defensemen that could start. That's why he's (at least a candidate to be) of the worst value on the Pens.

BONUS: Marian Hossa. Why? Because that would be lovely. He played for the Pens during the Year of the Curse (aka "high ankle sprain"), so perhaps he'll fall injured to one. Or two. Hell, let's go for him breaking his femur. >:)

Well everyone already knows the answer to this one, it's Collingwood. But coming in a close second would have to be Western Bulldog fans. Yes we have all seen what those people are like from the Western Suburbs on the Footy Shows Street Talk haven't we?

Kyle McLaren.

The guy brings absolutely the worst value to our team hands down. $2.5 mil for a guy that has seen his point production decline for the past 4 years? And that is horrible because he isn't a point producer to begin with, so to continually decline is just downright dreadful. But points aside, his intangibles are just as bad. The guy is extremely LAZY on his own end, takes untimely penalties, and will get outwitted more times than not by any opponent, probably the opposing goalie if they skated down the ice. When we acquired him back in the day, we gave up Jeff Jillson and Jeff Hackett. I guess we can call it a wash of a trade.

BONUS - Rob Blake at $5 million for the year. Ridiculous amount of money for a guy like him. Yes, he has the veteran awareness and was one of the top dmen from decades ago, but at that price is highway robbery. Brad Lukowich with his 2 Cup winning years, will prove to be more valuable at his lower salary and provide the same amount of leadership as Blake, if not more.

Here in the "why pay retail when we can overpay for mediocrity" capital, the list is much too long, but the Human Pylon (Bryan McCabe) must surely top the list of salary sinkholes.

I suppose Hossa's number is a red flag, but it's only one year, so Detroit isn't on the hook for a long-term deal.

The one that makes me shake my head is Sean Avery's dollars. A lot of cap space for a very limited guy.
Vinny
2008-07-28 09:39:09 UTC
Worse value on the Wings?

Hate to sound cocky but I think, everybody seems to be getting paid the right amount, if not underpaid. Zetterberg at 2.4 mil, Franzen at 900k is a steal deal. Hossa at 7.4 mil was the best price you can ask for. We'll see how that pans out next season.

BONUS: The obvious answer is Jeff Finger, even Lowe's laughing at Fletcher.

Erica i really like your Sydor answer, but he is only making $2.5 million and sHERO will be looking to deal him closer to the start of the season. (if there is a D injury the Pens should keep him around, but that is the only reason)

I will vote for Miroslav Satan who is making $3.5 this season. it is only a 1-year deal so it isn't that bad, i just think its too much to spend on this guy. Although i cannot wait to buy the #81 Satan shirt.

Who wont live up to his salary this year: Jeff Finger and Ryan Malone

I'm gonna say Derian Hatcher - he was better than he was the year before, but still was not up to what the Flyers were paying him. Looks like he'll continue to be a drain on the cap next year as well.

Bonus: I'm gonna say Brian Campbell just cause no one else has.
2008-07-28 10:26:47 UTC
As a Devils fan I will go with Elias for sure. Good solid player, but not the TOP forward that we need. Great presents, solid playmaker. 55 points this season in 70 some-odd games could and should be much stronger.

Been living off the Philly teat for over 40 years and produced 2 Cup championships.

Throw Peter Luukko in there too.

Where to start....

I won't even mention newly acquired over-payed players.

Gratton is not worth 1.25, imo. I just hope he is fantastic in the locker room.

I am going to guess Hossa...I like Hossa, but my gut tells me he is going to get injured this year. I hate when I get nasty gut feelings.

LMAO: Erica you said Hossa also! Great minds think alike...I hadn't even read your answer yet.

Brain McCabe! I`m not saying he`s awful but I`m saying that for being the highest paid Leaf last year he definitely didn`t live up to his expectation. He got paid more than Sundin! For that matter he sucked.

Bonus: um..... Finger.

Wallin. He's not nearly as good as he used to be, though with prices the way they are now he's a bargan.

Bonus: Mike Commodore. They paid what?! was my reaction to that. Finger is also getting paid too much.

It was Glen Murray and now they bought him out. I'm really happy to see where this organization is going, because finally it looks like its going somewhere besides the first round and then back home.

Bonus: Finger.

Bryce Salvador! $2.9 mil with only 11 points last season?! He's not even that good of a defensive defenseman either! We could've afforded BOTH him and Brylin with that kind of money!!
