I know I'm being a sour fan right now, but seriously, Bobby Ryan!
OMG, he has what the experts consider the best goal of the year!!!

dribbles puck 3 times

considered number 1 goal of the year

Anybody want to show me some Steve Mason videos, be my guest. The reason Mason won was because he was farther east. The more east you are the more recognized.

I admit, I've predicted Ryan's success this year should not be seen as his "Welcoming Party". I said his career may be short-lived, yet others see him being a force for years to come. Anything can happen.

I only recently read about his family situation (drugs, prison, moving around) and that kind of makes me want to root for him. We'll see..

Anyway, Mason was King for the entire season really. He consistently gave the Jackets a chance and broke some NHL records along the way. He earned it for sure.

As a Ducks Season Ticket holder and Private Box owner.....I've seen Bobby Ryan play a lot, and I didn't see a whole lot that merited being the Rookie of the Year.

As far as Ryan goes, you have to ask yourself why it took him so long to reach the NHL level (compared to other #2 picks, he's taken LONGER to reach the NHL). I've asked this question to both Burke and Murray and neither seems as high on him as you do.

Mason is a couple of years younger, and his numbers put him in the top 1% of ALL rookie goaltending seasons.

Ryan's 57 points place him 416th all time, or just inside 10% of all NHL rookie seasons.

So, the fact that none of our local scribes voted for him, and the fact that a 20 yr old puts himself into the top 1% of all rookie goaltenders ever, and Ryan barely gets himself into the top 10% - tells you how great a season Mason had.

But, you're right....20 years from now, we may realize that Mason's a bust, and Ryan is an all-time great. However, after 87 games, 926 NHL players had scored more points than Ryan....so a HOF career does not seem to be forthcoming.

I understand what you mean, that Bobby Ryan did have a spectacular season but the reason Ryan didn't win is because he has a great team around him: Getzlaf, Giguere, Pronger, Niedermayer, Perry and Kunitz (for most of the season). But Mason's surrounding's aren't as good: Nash and Huselias. That's all plus the Blue Jackets were not playoff contenders before him the ducks were always contenders. Bobby Ryan did not make the team contenders, Mason did. Last, it is said that the award goes to the player that is the most VALUABLE to the team and Mason exceeds Ryan in that aspect and Mason carried the team on his back.

Can you be any more of a bitter homer? Your "further east gets more attention" argument is getting old. Mason had 10 shut outs (more than your precious Giguere). Mason had the 2nd lowest GA average in the league. Best goal of the year (in your opinion of course) doesn't automatically win the Calder. Ryan had a good year but not outstanding, Mason's was outstanding. Awarding Ryan the Calder would have been wrong, no matter what Ducks fans think. And why are you bringing the playoff into this when the Calder is for regular season? I sometimes wonder why you ask questions when the only answer you want to hear is your own. (like your answer when you chose BA for this question) https://answersrip.com/question/index?qid=20090617162215AAvpkVr&show=7#profile-info-n1AlTUwmaa Let me guess, Go Isles for BA? lol

One goal does not a season make.

Ryan is a good player for sure. He's also had several short stints with Anaheim since 2005-06.

With all that being said...Mason got a team that had never been to the playoffs into the playoffs. The body of work of Mason is better than that of Ryan for this season.

With that said, Ryan is a solid player...him and Getzlaf could be cornerstones for Anaheim.

To what your details say...

These awards are for the REGULAR SEASON! It doesn't matter what happened in the playoffs with Columbus, Detroit, Anaheim and etc!

Plus, this isn't about TEAMS, it's about individuals. Mr. Bobby Ryan only had THREE points against Detroit in the 7 game series. FOUR against San Jose in a 6 game series.

1/4? Come on, get real now... Getzlaf, Hiller, Pronger, and Neidermeyer were the MAIN reasons Anaheim got so far.

Chris Mason will win via fact the voters think of that he's the 2d coming, while in actuality he advantages critically from the Hitchcock/Bluejacket shutout production unit. don't get me incorrect he's powerful, very stable yet he appeared to drop off in direction of the tip of the 365 days additionally. Who ought to win, Bobby Ryan, he in simple terms appeared to get greater beneficial and greater beneficial via fact the season stepped forward and replaced into the superb participant for the ducks on many nights. in simple terms approximately a factor a pastime %. and scored 31 targets in sixty 4 video games this 365 days. it fairly is form of like the 365 days it replaced into between Raycroft and Ryder, voters took Raycroft- in hindsight Ryder replaced into greater beneficial- and now the Bruins have the superb guy. So Mason will win, Ryan ought to win. Edit: Lity i think of it fairly is been a on condition that the finalists could be Mason, Ryan and somebody else. by using using being the somebody else Versteeg is a winner- he gained the different finalist trophy. certainly Versteeg's comments in the story particularly plenty echo that sentiment. "Bobby Ryan and Mason, those are 2 particularly particular gamers and to be loaded right into a type with those adult males, it fairly is a great compliment for myself" considering that Ryan has greater beneficial numbers than Versteeg it is going to be no longer elementary to make an arguement for him, regardless of if Ryan possibly has greater no a million line and PP time. superb i will do, i ought to locate an arguement for him yet I won't have self belief it.

Bobby Ryan is a great player, but Steve Mason carried his team to the playoffs for the first time in their history, and any player who can take Columbus to the playoffs must have some skill.

Mason i the better player and if we are giving awards based on great goals then why didnt rick nash win MVP last year for "the goal"?

Mason deserves it and im not just saying that cuz im a jackets fan...i also think kris versteeg deserved it over ryan

I can understand your frustration however Mason carried the load for Columbus in his first season. His excellent play down the stretch helped solidify his stake at the Calder Trophy and allowed Columbus to make the post-season for the very first time in franchise history. His numbers are very respectable (a few stats in the top 10) and his 10 shutouts led the league. Neither Ryan or Versteeg were all that clear -cut over one another, however they did have decent rookie campaigns.

Without Mason, Columbus is sitting somewhere down in the bottom 3 of the standings.

Without Ryan, Anaheim still makes the playoffs.

Your argument would have merit if

a) Mason played in the Eastern Conference (he plays in the West)

b) the Western voters (73 of them) chosen Ryan

As it was, Ryan had 9 first place votes - none from the 14 voters in California - in fact only 2 of Ryan's first place votes came from voters representing Western Conference cities (Denver and Vancouver)

Why did Mason win?

- youngest goaltender to get 10+ shutouts in a season

- youngest goaltender to win 30 games

- 3rd highest shutout total for a rookie goaltender (15 by Tony Esposito and 11 by Terry Sawchuk)

Ryan didn't average a point a game, so by a forward perspective...his season was less than average

I agree, I don't like the Ducks but Ryan was a monster and I can't imagine how dominating he'll be in 4-5 years.. but on a team like Columbus, they are rarely recognized throughout the league and it was kind of a toss up between the two...but u are right about the further East you are hte more u get recognized.. I mean look at Claude Julien when he won the Jack Adams trophy, the ONLY reason he beat out McLellan and Murray is b/c he's in the Eastern Conference..
