Question:
Calgary Flames, will there be any big names coming before the 08/09 deadline because of Sundin going to VAN?

From what i know is that the Calgary Flames pay about $56-$58M this year for ALL their dressed and undressed NHL players. And we have many overpaid veterans such as Warrener(2.5M + injured), Vandermeer(3M), Acoin(4M), Lankow (5M), Primeu (2M + bad ) who are just not worth it, maybe Acoin and Lanks are, but! We have the players to work with trading. And we have players we can move down such as: Prust, Roy,Padry, Primeu, Lundmark that could be moved down to increase the cap as well. I am not sure what the exact cap is this year. But do you think the Flames will make a trade for someone like: Spezza, Kaberle, big names like that, that are rumoured to be traded. From what i see is that the Flames could open up to 5-7.5M in cap space if they lost faith in some of their overpaid veterans, and now that Mats Sundin signed with the Canucks we would have to increase our skill in the roster as well to increase our chances against Vancouver?

First off, Flames fan here . . . .

I dont particularly see it happening.

I like the idea od OTT they have over the last 2 seasons fallen so far off the map they may be ready to scrap the world and rebuild???

All I can say is I hope so.

I think personally that Van despite records was not quite as good as Calgary, but I think Sundin may change that and depending on his chemistry maybe significantly since scoring is really their only deficiency and they will be able to play even tighter now with increased scoring and when Luongo is back look out.

It really depends on what they can swing . . . .and what teams decide to sell off players.

I still think head to head the Flames can still beat the Canucks . . .

First of all, the Calgary Flames can still go up against the Cancucks and win even when the nucks do have Sundin and Luongo.

And to answer your question, Darryl Sutter has made big contract offers that he shouldn't of have, some examples of that are Rhett Warrener, Idon'tt think he will be playing a game this season, and is getting him self a big juicy 2.5 Million dollar contract, same with Aucoin, cmon 4 million? Seriously? Thats ludacrous, and isn't Kipper getting paid a bit to much? I cant remember how much it was, I think 8million. his season this year is pretty much up and down, but he has been playing great as of late. Sorry, i keep getting off topic.. lol.

The Flames are probably going to trade either Mathieu Lombardi, or Michael Cammaleri for Jason Spezza, its gonna look like this: To OTT:Lombardi or Cammealeri, a 3rd round pick and the sens need a puck moving defence men, maybe cory sarich? To the Flames: Spezza, and maybe another player.

Im pretty sure Spezza's coming to Calgary.

The Flames will win the NW division and the Canucks will play good hockey, but the Flames are still capable of beating the Vancouver Canucks.

The problem with freeing up cap space is that you can't just throw out a contract. That's why they call it a contract. In order to release a player, the team either has to buy out the contract (pay the total amount) or another team would have to pick up the contract (through waivers, trade, etc).

The easiest way to do this is through trade. So if you want to get rid of some of Calgary's older, slightly overpaid players, you will have to find another team that is willing to pay them. I doubt a team would pick up the contract of a Vandermeer, Aucoin, or Warrener.

I personally don't think the Flames need to make wholescale changes just to 'keep up' with Vancouver. They are already a good team, and when things are going good, you don't change anything. The time to think about change is when things start going a little worse, and you see where the holes in the team are.

Not sure I like the idea of a guy like Spezza coming to Calgary, just my opinion, but Sutter spent most of the off-season ridding the team of 'skilled' players like tanguay and huselius, and adding talented grittier players like Cammalleri and Bertuzzi. So I don't really see Sutter making big changes to make room for a guy who doesn't really play his type of system.

"we have players we can move down such as: Prust, Roy,Padry, Primeu, Lundmark that could be moved down to increase the cap as well"

Pardy is playing extremely well, for what he makes especially, Roy is beating up those who need to be beaten up, that's his job, and Lundmark most likely will go down, he's only been called up from Quad City to replace an injured Glenncross.

But ya, Prust and Primeau can go, but I don't think cap space is the issue, Spezza won't be coming to Clagary because we don't need him, I suspect the Flames don't make any major deal this year at all, they like the team as they are and feel they can win with what they have.

Unless they trade Dion "Im the most overrated player in the NHL since Bobby Holik, good think I make a big hit now and then to make stupid fans forget what a liability I am on defense with my constant poorly timed pinches leading to countless 2 on 1's per game" Phaneuf for Spezza, that'd be alright.

Spezza for sure so Keenan can abuse him, Kaberle not really western type player.

maybe Rory Fitzpatrick if they are lucky
