So we want to throw an octopus on the ice at a playoff home game. Because it's a huge tradition in Detroit and the Red Wings promote it with their campaign called octopi Hockeytown. I know the NHL doesn't promote throwing things on the ice during a game. But I was just wondering what would happen if we did throw it on the ice? or if anything will happen if we did? I know it's a weird question but anything would help. We are not looking to get thrown out of the game .

Officially the Red Wings warn fans that the throwing of objects on the playing surface can result in ejection and prosecution based on city ordinances which can result in a fine. It is a tricky proposition as the Wings really don't have a problem with it (but Bettman has a serious issue with it) so the odds are in your favor. However last year a fan was arrested, ejected (obviously) and received a fine of $500 for throwing an octopi. The league offices actually contacted the city of Detroit police department and asked that they enforce city ordinances and one officer did just that. 5 octopi were tossed that night and only one guy got hit with any consequence, an officer has to actually see the toss to make the arrest and most admit they wont see anything. Bottom line is the Wings officially don't condone tossing octopi however unofficially they love it but with the fine line between them getting in trouble with the league and hoping tradition continues does require them to "bust" someone on occasion. It could be you....someone has to be the sacrificial lamb and suffer the fine and ejection (the arrest is simply for show, you are booked and released and given the fine via video judgment). So there you have it, last year one person out of several paid a steep price, all the other tossers managed to go "undetected".

First, boil the octopus before you take it to the game, it's not as messy then. Don't throw it on while play is in progress, only during a stoppage in play. The best time would be at the end of a period, so you can be sure you won't hit one of the players with it. Don't throw it from your seat, pick a place where you're less likely to be see throwing it.

If yopu are caught you will be thrown out of the arena. It is NHL rules. The Red Wings might allow you readmission but that is unlikely. The Red Wings cannot be seen to allow this to happen. The NHL fines them for these infractions which they deem to be avoidable. If they are seen to condone the practice the fines become quite large.

If you're in the lower bowl and you don't hit anyone with it, my guess is that you'll be left alone. I wouldn't show it to people, but just quietly walk in with it in tow.
