my son is new to hockey but seems to really enjoy the sport. i have never played competitively as a youth, my closest experience with hockey was playing about a half mile from my house on a farmers pond. we have gone to see several AHL games, the hershey bears are only about 10 minutes away. i have also started to watch flyers games on t.v. with him. he is doing well skating and my wife and i were wondering what the next step would be. also in regards to skates are their any places to purchase used hockey skates? it just seems awful expensive to spend money for something that won't fit a 6 year old 8 months down the road. thanks!

Look for a Play it again store. Or check with the rink to see if some of their teams are having a used equipment sale. Also try maybe craigslist or ebay .

For next steps in learning hockey, the local rinks should have a learn to play class for his age group. That would be the next step. If he is excelling, then they may want to put him on a house team to get actual playing time .

First i would like to say that i am glad to see that your son is getting into hockey. It is a shame that the amount of youth participants have gone down in the past few years. As far as your next steps, head up to your local rink, and enroll your son in a fundamental camp. They will teach him all the correct ways to skate, shoot, and pass along with many other skills that the best players work on daily. These camps can be done at anytime during the season you just have to find the right one for your availability. Then from there get him signed up for a youth season at the local rink.

As far as buying used skates you can purchase used skates at a store called play it again sports, they usually have a pretty good selection. I would not recommend this though. The option I recommend is going to your local hockey shop and getting a pair from there. You can choose a lower model of skate and get them nicely priced. Obviously don't buy off the internet but look at these skates, Vapors for $40.

There not exactly like the pro skates but do come close and will be good enough for your child.

Ask your local hockey rink instructors. That's how I got started. Until your son stops growing as much or begins to take his playing level to a serious high intensity level use used gear for the most part. I love the Hershey Bears! GOOOO CAPS!

Try a local sports store that sells second hand gear!

You can get a great price for a used pair of skates and they will be already be broken in.

Plus when your son grows out of them, you can sell them back to the store!

I started playing hockey around 6 years ago, i'm a goalie and all the gear that I bought was second hand.

As I grew and my dad knew I was gonna stick to the sport he got me brand new gear of my own.

Since your son is only young, I would suggest putting him in power skating,

It will teach him the basics of skating (forward, backward, crossovers)

You can also register him in a local hockey league.

His age group is called "Novice"

Hope it works out!

I see your point and can relate from when I tried to intice my now-7 year old niece to get some ice time.

I don't have any personal knowledge of stores in your area, but go to www.craigslist.org, look up the Philadelphia site and put hockey in the for sale / wanted query.

Meanwhile it's just a matter of time before the Flyer fans within this section see this and have better insight .. (though there are knowledgable fans of many teams here .. I meant that in that they will know where stores closer to you are and such)

I take it that you live in PA? Well, in Ohio there are many places that sell used hockey equipment (i.e. Play it Again Sports).
