Question:
What would you do if you were in charge of the OT rule, would you change it or keep the current OT system?

What would you do

1. Reinstate the 1983/84-1998/99 OT rule where the OT winner got 2 points and the OT loser got no points, if there was no scoring then it ended as a tie

2 Reinstate the 1999/00-2003/04 OT rule where the OT winner got 2 points and the OT loser got 1 point, if there was no scoring then it ended as a tie

3. Keep the current OT rule where the OT winner gets 2 points and the OT loser gets 1 point, if no one scores then it goes to a shootout

4. Other, please say how you would modify it

I would keep the current point system and extend the OT to a full 20 minute period of 5 on 5 hockey because most OT games in the playoffs end in the first OT. If no one scores then it goes to a shootout.

I would make OT longer, but still 4 on 4. I love seeing all of the open ice, it makes it a completely different game and with a different strategy. After a 20 minute OT, if nobody scores, then go to a shootout. 5 minutes isn't long enough.

One overtime, 4 on 4 10 minutes. Winner gets 2 points, loser gets 1. The shootout is complete garbage

Extending OT will not work. For some reason the NHL in one of its iterations of the CBA identified this as a playing condition and any change would require NHLPA approval. Extending OT beyond 5 minutes means additional work for some players and would therefore require additional salary, or some other concession like more money share or less practice time.

Call me old fashioned but there was nothing wrong with the pre 1983 system. Kind of missed the announcer saying "one minute left in the game".

1. 5 on 5 OT for 5 minutes. Winner gets 2 points loser gets nothing, and a tie is one point for both.

4) Keep it at 4-4 five minute sudden death OT and a following shootout, but change the points system to a three-point system

Win = 3 points, OT Win = 2 points, OT Loss = 1 point, Loss = 0 points.

I would do 4 on 4 for 10 minutes and get rid of the shoot-out and loser point. 2 points for any kind of win, 0 points for any kind of loss and 1 point to each team if game ends in a tie.

change it to 4 on 4 for 5 minutes

then 3 on 3 for 5 minutes

then pull the goalies for next 5 minutes of 3 on 3

then if no score 2 on 2 with no goalies
