Carey Price?

I have my suspicion that Gainey probably thought the Hossa deal was in the pocket and sent Huet away because they would have gotten that impact player they needed all this time. Unfortunately things didn't pan out that way.

I hope Price does find some consistency soon. Everyone sees the huge upside to this kid and wants him to succeed. Remember that Jose Theodore had a huge upside as well when he was a Hab and you don't want Carey Price to be the next Theodore.

However I'm glad now the trade deadline has passed so I don't have to hear any more rumours about Vincent Lecavalier coming to Montreal ......until July.

What?

No mention of Jimmy Waite?

I wasn't surprised that Montreal traded a goaltender, I was surprised which one was sent packing though.. There were rumours heating up that one of the three was going, but the betting was on Halak. I think that while people were caught off guard with Huet, they were even more off guard by the fact it was only a second rounder in return. Apparently deals with Tampa and Los Angeles fell through leaving Washington as the only team looking for a front line goaltender.

The step up from the AHL to the NHL is a huge one, even moreso for goaltenders. It remains to be seen if Price can carry the load at the NHL level. I'm thinking that

a) Gainey should have held out for more that a 2nd rounder

b) Montreal kissed any legitimate shot at the Cup away

I can understand why he did it, but you are right he is gambling on this one.

His rationale was that he had no intention of keeping Huet longterm over Halak. I think he realized that next year he was going with Price/Halak and that in all likelihood the Habs will not go deep in this years playoffs so give the kids the experience that will help them for next year.

The only way the Habs can do damage is if they get amazing goaltending and Huet will give you at best steady goaltending, not amazing and certainly not under pressure. Huet would not carry this team in the playoffs.

In terms of playoff experience Huet has all of 6 games compared to Price's 0 Nhl games and about 20 AHL games.

Huet always seems to hit a wall at about the 40 games played mark, starts going down early and swimming on his knees.

As a Habs fan I feel more comfortable with Price in the net than Huet. After Huet gets scored on in a game he is less effective and the second goal comes quick- seems to lose focus.

So yes I understand Gainey's decision, however were I in is place i would have forgone the 2nd round pick and kept Huet as insurance knowing I was going to let him walk as a UFA.

As to the comparisons to Patrick Roy or Wade Flaherty and co, forget it Price is Price not someone else. We will see what he can do, from what i see of his personality he is not the type to be ruined by failure. he played for Tri-City that barely won a game his first year as a starter.

Like you said if he got the job Done in AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs, Wait Until June when He lead the Habs to their 25th Stanley Cup Title This Year, If you are looking for the Next Goalie for Montreal to be Proud of you got it in Carey Price.

Montreal is currently in a mess of a situation, going into the playoffs with 2 goalies who have absolutely no experience. Price wont rise to the occasion and I see Montreal out first round. That organization confuses me with all that cap space, I was for sure they were going to make a big move, but instead they got my ballot for the stupidest move of the year.

I like Price and i agree that he will one day become a top goalie in the nhl, but that was a bad trade by him. Price is going to need another veteran goalie to help him out, this mistake might just make Price worse, since he does not have another veteran goalie teaching him.

It will be tough on him, his whole career might end up like Jim Carey's did (the goalie Jim Carey, not the actor Jim Carrey).

LOL Phaneuf better have some good insurance.

i agree, i don't think he is ready to put under the pressure of being a #1 goalie

i don't know their reasons for trading Huet but i'd rather have kept him or at least got someone in return that could be used if Price does make errors

they do have Halak as well but he seems to be in the same situation as Price, just not capable of winning the SC

I agree, having a rookie in the playoffs can work but as we have seen most of the time it never does.

Yeah placing him under so much pressure so early in his career can ruin him like you said. He has so much potential i think that it would have been much better off him being a backup for like 1 more year and then being a full time starter.

Did that really happen to Phaneuf LOL what kind of truck was it?

I can't wait to hear what lame nickname Sabres fans come up with for Bernier and start referring to him as such in all serious hockey talks. <---Sarcasm.

I like Price. I got to see him base on the Pens twice, which certainly influences me, but not my entire opinion. I just think the kid's good. I don't know about him being the next Roy or anything though... It takes a REALLY special goalie to be really solid at such a young age. You've heard it a thousand times: goaltenders develop and come into their own later, usually. OH, and I should add that even if Price is to become a great, great goalie, playing him as the #1 too early could hurt his development, no?

Totally unrelated (but you're all over the place too, so nyah!), but... I love Drew Remenda. Why couldn't NBC or Versus snag a guy like that? I'm torn between thinking he'd be great for promoting hockey to the US because he's awesome and thinking it'd be a waste because he'd have to dumb his commentating down too much.

LMAO @ the Phaneuf story. Wow, that was... not smart.
